CROSSROADS PUBLIC ART

Julie Campbell and Alan Nehring, representatives from the Crossroads Business District, discussed the public art piece proposed for their district.  Mr. Nehring stated that he liked the piece and location, just had some issues with the moving aspect.  Ms. Campbell stated that the general opinion of the district was that they didn't like the piece, but they are excited to get a piece.

The Commission asked if there was a piece or an artist that they liked.  Ms. Campbell stated that they like Rudy Torrini.  Ms. Bradley stated that he is really traditional, and a piece by him may not fit on that corner.

Ms. Campbell stated that they also were considering something to honor Bob Cassily.  Ms. Bradley asked if the Business District is putting in suggestions, if they are willing to help finance a piece.  Ms. Campbell stated that she wasn't sure.

It was decided that next month, we will review suggestions from both the Arts Commission and Crossroads.

PUBLIC ART FUND

Mayor Welch stated that we did not get the grant we recently sought. She is talking with the Council about the possibility of the City funding the park portion of the sculpture park and the Commission getting funding for the sculptures.

The Commission discussed the Public Art Fund.  Don Drissell, Marilynne Bradley, Davis Allen, Lauren Bakker and Mayor Welch will work on a rough draft of plans for the fund, including what we want to fund, other sites and a list of potential pieces/artists.

ART AMBASSASORS

Mr. Drissell stated that he thinks it is a good idea to have representatives, or ambassadors from the Commission on various groups in the community.

MISCELLANEOUS UPDATES

The 7 p.m. performance on January 29 is the performance of Sunday in the Park with George that the group will attend.

Mr. Allen suggested that the Commission visit the Seiler building (current home of the WG Library) to assess its potential for an Arts Center.  He will contact the Commission to set something up.

ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business to come before the Commission, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
